Dominican Republic digital nomad visa & residency (2026)
Dominican Republic shaded by its digital nomad & residency status
The Dominican Republic has no dedicated digital nomad visa as of May 2026; a 2024 legislative proposal for e-visas covering remote workers remained under review and had not been enacted. Remote workers can nonetheless establish legal long-term residency via the Rentista (passive income ≥ US$2,000/month), Pensionado (pension ≥ US$1,500/month), or Investor (≥ US$200,000 invested locally) routes, all of which grant immediate permanent residence under Law 171-07 with significant tax incentives on foreign-sourced income.
Key points
As of May 2026 the Dominican Republic has not enacted a specific digital nomad or remote-work visa. A 2024 Senate proposal (referencing draft Law 875-78 on Visas) called for e-visas and tailored privileges for digital nomads, but remained in committee review with no confirmed passage.
Foreigners proving a minimum monthly passive income of US$2,000 from a foreign company or institution qualify for Residence by Investment as a Renter (RT category). Income must be passive (investments, dividends, rental yields, bank deposits) — active freelance/remote-work income does not qualify. Approval grants immediate permanent residence, renewable annually.
Retirees receiving a government or private pension of at least US$1,500/month (plus US$250 per dependent) qualify for the Pensionado residency category, also granting immediate permanent residence under Law 171-07.
Foreign nationals who invest a minimum of US$200,000 in the Dominican Republic qualify for Investor Residence (permanent). A fast-track processing window of approximately 45 business days applies to all three Law 171-07 categories (Pensionado, Rentista, Investor).
Beneficiaries of the Pensionado and Rentista categories receive a permanent exemption from Dominican income tax on all foreign-sourced income, exemption from import duties on personal/household goods, a 50% reduction in property tax and mortgage registration fees, and exemption from taxes on dividends and interest earned abroad.
Most nationalities may enter visa-free for 30 days (extendable within the country for up to 120 days total). There is no formal short-stay remote-work endorsement; staying beyond the tourist period without a residency permit is irregular. The Ordinary Temporary Residence (RT-9) provides a general one-year temporary residence permit outside the Law 171-07 fast-track categories.
