The UAE operates a dedicated one-year renewable Remote Work Visa (Virtual Working Programme), launched in October 2020, allowing foreign nationals employed by or owning businesses registered outside the UAE to reside under self-sponsorship with full Emirates ID. Requirements were materially tightened in 2026: the monthly income floor rose to USD 5,000 (from USD 3,500), mandatory health-insurance coverage increased to AED 500,000, bank-statement proof doubled to six consecutive months, and employment documents must now be apostilled and UAE-mission attested. Separately, a 10-year Golden Visa and 5-year Green Visa offer longer-term residency for investors, high-earning professionals, and freelancers.

Key points

Dedicated Remote Work Visa

The Virtual Working Programme is a one-year self-sponsored residence permit for remote workers employed by or running companies registered outside the UAE. Successful applicants receive an Emirates ID; no UAE employer sponsor is required. The visa is renewable provided eligibility criteria continue to be met.

2026 Eligibility Tightening

Effective April 2026 (per a January 2026 ICP/GDRFA joint circular phased in over Q1): minimum monthly income raised to USD 5,000; health insurance mandatory at AED 500,000 coverage per person (up from AED 150,000); bank statements required for six consecutive months (up from three); employment contracts or proof of company ownership must be fully legalised/apostilled abroad and attested by UAE missions — self-declared PDFs no longer accepted. Applicants must also show at least one full year with the same employer or entity.

Application Channels by Emirate

Dubai applicants apply through the GDRFA or AMER service centres; residents of other emirates apply via the ICP Smart Services federal portal. Abu Dhabi additionally operates its own parallel Remote Work Visa through the Abu Dhabi Residents Office (ADRO), with the same USD 3,500/month income floor (ADRO page not yet updated to reflect April 2026 federal changes as of search date).

Golden Visa (Residency by Investment)

The UAE Golden Visa grants 5- or 10-year renewable residency without a local sponsor to investors (minimum AED 2,000,000 in qualifying real estate or assets), entrepreneurs (projects valued ≥ AED 500,000), and professionals earning ≥ AED 30,000/month. Categories expanded in 2025–2026 to include content creators, educators, nurses with 15+ years' service, and e-sports professionals.

Green Visa for Freelancers

The UAE Green Visa offers a five-year self-sponsored residency for skilled freelancers and self-employed individuals, requiring a UAE-issued freelance permit and evidence of average annual income of at least AED 360,000 over the preceding two years — an alternative path for remote workers who establish a local freelance licence.
