Isle of Man digital nomad visa & residency (2026)
Isle of Man shaded by its digital nomad & residency status
The Isle of Man has no dedicated digital nomad visa. Remote workers and relocators must use existing pathways: a self-employed work permit (for non-Isle of Man workers), the Worker Migrant Visa (employer-sponsored), or Business Migrant routes (Start-Up/Innovator) for entrepreneurs. The government's Locate Isle of Man programme actively promotes relocation, including for remote workers, and provides guidance on permit and tax obligations.
Key points
The Isle of Man has not created a bespoke remote-work or digital-nomad visa category. Remote workers wishing to live and work on the Island must comply with standard work permit and immigration rules.
Anyone who is not classified as an 'Isle of Man worker' (i.e., does not yet have five years' continuous ordinary residence) must obtain a work permit before taking up self-employment. Self-employed individuals apply online themselves; the fee is £60 and permits are issued for up to five years. Processing typically takes around one week.
British and Irish citizens may live in the Isle of Man without any immigration permission. However, they still require a work permit to take up employment or self-employment unless they have already accrued Isle of Man worker status (five years' unbroken ordinary residence).
Nationals from outside the UK/Ireland who wish to establish or run a business can apply via the Business Migrant – Start-Up or Business Migrant – Innovator visa. Both require a Letter of Endorsement from the Department for Enterprise (£1,000 fee). The Innovator route requires at least £50,000 in investment funds for new ventures and must create at least three full-time permanent jobs within 36 months. Visas are granted for three years, renewable indefinitely.
The government's Locate Isle of Man agency explicitly targets remote workers as potential relocators, providing guidance on work permit requirements, tax obligations in multiple jurisdictions, and employer payroll registration with the Isle of Man Income Tax Division. It does not grant visa rights itself but acts as a concierge for the relocation process.
After five years of continuous ordinary residence, a person acquires 'Isle of Man worker' status and no longer needs a work permit. Those on eligible immigration routes can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after the requisite residence period, and subsequently for British citizenship, without becoming UK tax resident.
