Senegal shaded by its digital nomad & residency status

Senegal has no dedicated digital-nomad or remote-work visa. Remote workers may legally stay up to 90 days under visa-free arrangements available to many nationalities, and can pursue longer residency via a long-stay employment visa plus Carte d'Identité d'Étranger (CIE), or as a self-employed person through an autorisation d'établissement requiring local business registration. No residency-by-investment or golden-visa program exists.

Key points

No dedicated digital nomad visa

As of 2026, Senegal has not launched a dedicated digital nomad or remote-work visa category. No official government announcement of a forthcoming program has been identified.

Visa-free short stays (up to 90 days)

Citizens of many countries — including the US, EU member states, Canada, UK, Japan, and others — may enter Senegal visa-free for stays up to 90 days. Working remotely for foreign employers during this period exists in a legal grey area, as no formal work authorisation is granted.

Long-stay visa + CIE for stays beyond 90 days

Foreign nationals wishing to stay more than 90 days must obtain a Visa Long Séjour (issued abroad) then a Carte d'Identité d'Étranger (CIE) from DPETV. The CIE is issued for six months (renewable) and requires proof of legal activity — employment contract, business registration, or authorised self-employment.

Self-employed/freelance route (autorisation d'établissement)

Self-employed foreigners may obtain an autorisation d'établissement and CIE by registering a business locally and obtaining a NINEA (tax ID). This is the closest available pathway for independent remote workers, but it requires physical business establishment in Senegal, not merely working for foreign clients.

Employer-tied work permits

Standard work permits are conditional on a signed employment contract with a specific Senegalese employer, approved by the Directorate of Labour and Social Security. There is no employer-independent or freelance work permit category for remote workers serving foreign clients.

ECOWAS free movement exception

Citizens of ECOWAS member states (15 West African countries) benefit from free movement rights under the 1975 Lagos Treaty ratified by Senegal, and are exempt from work-permit requirements. This provides an effectively open pathway for ECOWAS nationals.

No golden visa / residency by investment

Senegal does not operate a residency-by-investment or golden-visa program. No such scheme was identified in official or authoritative sources as of 2026.
