Myanmar digital nomad visa & residency (2026)
Myanmar shaded by its digital nomad & residency status
Myanmar has no dedicated digital nomad visa and no formal legal pathway permitting remote work by foreign nationals. The only e-Visa categories are Tourist (28 days) and Business (70 days), neither of which authorises remote employment or freelance activity. The country has been under military rule since the February 2021 coup, and major Western governments — including the US (Level 4 Do Not Travel), UK, Australia, Canada, and EU members — advise against all travel to Myanmar, making the country practically inaccessible for residency planning.
Key points
Myanmar has not established any dedicated digital nomad, remote work, or freelancer visa category. The MOIP e-Visa portal issues only Tourist (28-day) and Business (70-day) visas, with no provision for location-independent workers.
The Tourist eVisa costs USD 50 and allows 28 days; the Business eVisa costs USD 70 and allows 70 days (requires company invitation). Both are valid for 90 days from issue date and processed within 3 working days. Neither legally authorises remote work for a foreign employer.
Myanmar's Permanent Residence scheme is open to foreign experts, investors, and relatives of Myanmar citizens who have resided continuously in-country for at least 3 years. Applicants pay USD 500 and receive a 5-year card; there is no investment-only 'golden visa' fast-track. This is not a viable route for digital nomads.
Myanmar law explicitly prohibits holders of Tourist and Business visas from engaging in paid work. The military regime is known for arbitrary enforcement of local laws, including detention of foreigners without transparent legal process, significantly elevating risk for anyone working informally on a tourist visa.
The US State Department issued a Level 4 (Do Not Travel) advisory for Myanmar, citing armed conflict, civil unrest, arbitrary detention, wrongful detention, landmines, and risk of military conscription for dual nationals. The UK, Australia, Canada, and EU issue equivalent warnings, making lawful long-stay relocation impractical for most nationals.
Myanmar's People's Military Service Law (enforced since 2024) requires male citizens aged 18–35 and female citizens aged 18–27 to serve 2–3 years in the military if called. The junta does not recognise dual nationality; foreign passport holders with any claim to Myanmar citizenship may be detained and conscripted.
