Mauritius digital nomad visa & residency (2026)
Mauritius shaded by its digital nomad & residency status
Mauritius launched a dedicated Premium Visa in October 2020 specifically for remote workers, digital nomads, retirees, and long-stay visitors wishing to live and work from the island. It is a 1-year, multi-entry, renewable visa requiring proof of foreign-sourced income of at least USD 1,500/month. Longer-term pathways exist via a Self-Employed Occupation Permit (10 years) and a Permanent Residence Permit (20 years) for those willing to invest.
Key points
Launched October 2020, the Premium Visa allows a stay of up to 1 year, renewable, with multi-entry rights. It is open to citizens of 114 eligible countries and requires a minimum monthly income of USD 1,500 (single) / USD 3,000 (with partner), sourced exclusively from abroad. A USD 50 non-refundable application fee was introduced from 1 December 2025.
Applications are submitted online via the EDB portal; processing is officially 48 hours on weekdays. Required documents include an employment contract or 6 months of bank statements, proof of accommodation, comprehensive health insurance, and a return/onward ticket.
Mauritius-sourced income earned while on a Premium Visa is taxed on a remittance basis. A holder who stays more than 183 days in a tax year becomes a Mauritian tax resident, potentially subjecting worldwide income remitted to a Mauritian bank account to income tax.
Freelancers and solo operators can apply for a Self-Employed Occupation Permit, valid for 10 years with a path to 20-year Permanent Residence. It requires an initial transfer of USD 50,000 into a Mauritian business bank account, submission of three letters of intent (two from local clients), and meeting progressive turnover thresholds (MUR 750,000 in year 1, cumulative MUR 6 million by year 5).
A 20-year Permanent Residence Permit is available to investors committing at least USD 375,000 in a qualifying Mauritian business or in a qualifying residential property. Holders of 10-year Occupation Permits (investor, professional, self-employed) can also qualify for the 20-year PRP by meeting cumulative income/turnover thresholds over three consecutive years.
Foreign nationals employed by a company not based in Mauritius may alternatively apply for a Professional Occupation Permit (combined work and residence permit). This requires a valid employment contract of at least 12 months and a minimum gross monthly salary threshold, and is administered via the EDB's National Electronic Licensing System (NELS).
