Mali digital nomad visa & residency (2026)
Mali shaded by its digital nomad & residency status
Mali has no dedicated digital nomad or remote-work visa. The general immigration framework (Loi 04-058, 2004) permits foreigners to obtain a residence card (carte de séjour) by demonstrating sufficient means of subsistence without salaried employment, which is the only theoretical route for a self-employed remote worker. In practice this pathway is severely constrained: Mali carries a U.S. State Department Level 4 'Do Not Travel' advisory as of January 2026 due to terrorism, kidnapping and armed conflict, and as of 1 January 2026 Mali suspended visas to U.S. citizens entirely.
Key points
Mali has not introduced any dedicated digital nomad, remote-work, or freelancer visa category. It does not appear on any official or authoritative lists of countries offering such programs as of May 2026.
Under Loi 04-058 and Décret 05-322, foreigners wishing to establish themselves without salaried employment must provide proof of means of existence and a medical certificate. A multi-entry long-stay visa (6 months to 5 years) and residence card (carte de séjour) can then be issued by the Direction de la Police et des Frontières in Bamako.
Foreign nationals undertaking salaried work need both a long-stay visa and a separate work permit (permis de travail) with a visa-endorsed employment contract, processed through Malian labour and immigration authorities.
As of 1 January 2026, the government of Mali suspended the issuance of visas to U.S. citizens. Other nationalities may face similar bilateral restrictions; applicants should verify with the nearest Malian diplomatic mission before any travel.
The U.S. State Department (Level 4), UK FCDO, and Canada DFATD all advise against all travel to Mali due to ongoing terrorism, kidnapping of foreign nationals, armed conflict, and severe movement restrictions. This makes the theoretical residency pathway practically inaccessible for most remote workers.
Mali operates no residency-by-investment or 'golden visa' program. There is no formal preferential residency route for high-net-worth individuals or investors beyond the general establishment permit under Loi 04-058.
