Maldives digital nomad visa & residency (2026)
Maldives shaded by its digital nomad & residency status
The Maldives has no dedicated digital nomad or remote-work visa as of May 2026. Remote workers de facto rely on the free 30-day tourist visa on arrival, extendable to 90 days via the IMUGA online portal, though no explicit legal authorization for remote work exists under this category. A residency-by-investment programme (The Maldives Pearl Residence) is in launch phase for 2026, targeting capital investors rather than remote workers.
Key points
All nationalities receive a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival with no pre-approval required. It can be extended by a further 60 days (maximum 90 days total) through the Maldives Immigration Department or IMUGA portal. This is the primary route used by remote workers in the absence of a dedicated visa.
As of May 2026, the Maldives has not enacted or launched a formal digital nomad or remote-work visa. A remote-work visa and a content-creator visa have been reported under government consideration, but neither has been legislated or officially announced with effective dates.
The Maldives Pearl Residence, developed with Henley & Partners under an agreement signed July 2025, is the country's first residency-by-investment programme, announced for launch in April 2026. It targets qualifying capital investments (primarily real estate) and does not offer a pathway for ordinary remote workers or self-employed individuals.
Permanent residency is legally available only to foreign nationals married to a Maldivian citizen, with the additional requirement that the applicant be Muslim. There is no general permanent residency route for independent earners, remote workers, or long-stay visitors.
The Maldives issues work visas exclusively to foreigners holding a valid Work Permit issued by the Ministry of Economic Development, tied to a specific local employer. Self-employed remote workers and those employed by foreign companies are ineligible for this route.
Effective 23 April 2026, Maldives Immigration simplified the tourist visa extension process through the IMUGA portal under the Maldives 2.0 Initiative, with key details auto-populated and processing times reduced to 48 hours — improving the practical experience for longer-stay visitors including remote workers.
