Lithuania digital nomad visa & residency (2026)
Lithuania shaded by its digital nomad & residency status
Lithuania has no dedicated digital nomad visa. Non-EU remote workers can lawfully reside long-term through a Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) under the self-employment/individual activity ('individuali veikla') legal-activity category, or via the Startup Visa or Investor (Golden) Visa routes. July 2024 amendments to the Law on the Legal Status of Aliens tightened eligibility and reduced the annual third-country-national work quota to 24,830 for 2025.
Key points
Lithuania does not offer a specific digital nomad or remote-work visa category for non-EU/EEA nationals. The Migration Department's publicly listed TRP categories are: family, work, science, legal activity, investment, and country-specific tracks (AU, CA, JP, KR, NZ, UK, US); none is labelled 'digital nomad'.
Non-EU nationals who register individual activity (individuali veikla pagal pažymą) in Lithuania can apply for a TRP under the 'legal activity' category. The financial sufficiency threshold equals the statutory minimum wage — €1,038/month in 2025. The EU Immigration Portal confirms this as the operative self-employed route.
Targeted at founders of innovative businesses; requires approval by Startup Lithuania, proof of funds of at least €1,038/month, and health insurance (min. €30,000 coverage). The initial TRP is issued for 2 years and may be extended up to 5 years cumulative.
A TRP based on business investment requires a minimum equity investment of €50,000 in a Lithuanian company, a viable business plan, and creation of local jobs. The permit is issued for 2 years and is renewable; permanent residence is available after 5 years of continuous legal stay.
Amendments to the Law on Legal Status of Aliens, in force from 1 July 2024, tightened work-based residence conditions: stricter employer-change rules (min. 6 months before switching), mandatory A1 certificates for posted workers, and a reduced annual quota of 24,830 third-country-national permits for 2025 (down 38% from 40,000 in 2024).
EU, EEA, and Swiss nationals may live and work in Lithuania without a permit; they must register with municipal authorities after 3 months. Third-country nationals seeking a preliminary long-stay entry may obtain a National Visa Type D (up to 12 months, fee €140) before converting to a TRP in-country.
