Botswana digital nomad visa & residency (2026)

Botswana has not introduced a dedicated digital nomad, remote-work, or freelancer visa category as of May 2026. No official government announcement of a forthcoming one has been identified.

Visa-exempt nationals may enter for up to 90 days; those requiring a visa must obtain a tourism or visitor visa. Both categories explicitly prohibit the holder from working, providing services, or selling goods — including remote work for foreign employers.

Standard work permits are issued to foreign nationals employed by a specific Botswana-based employer and require the employer to demonstrate that no qualified citizen was available (labour market test). This route is not suitable for remote workers with foreign clients.

Foreign nationals who register or invest in a Botswana-incorporated business may apply for an investor work permit and accompanying residence permit. No statutory minimum capital investment is specified. This is the closest pathway for self-employed remote workers, though the process is multi-step and lengthy.

Permanent residence is available to long-term permit holders who meet continuous residence requirements. It confers a labour exemption certificate allowing self-employment without an annual work permit renewal.

President Duma Boko signed an MOU with Arton Capital at the UN General Assembly on 26 September 2025 to establish an 'Impact Investment Program' — a citizenship-by-investment scheme starting at USD 75,000–90,000 non-refundable contribution targeting Q1 2026 launch. Full launch is contingent on a legislative amendment permitting dual citizenship; as of May 2026 the programme had not formally opened to applications.
