Barbados digital nomad visa & residency (2026)
Barbados shaded by its digital nomad & residency status
Barbados operates a dedicated 12-month remote-work visa called the Welcome Stamp, launched July 2020 and extended by Cabinet through December 31, 2026. It permits non-Barbadian remote workers earning at least USD 50,000/year to live and work remotely in Barbados for a non-renewable (but re-applicable) one-year period. A separate residency-by-investment route (SERP) provides longer-term or permanent residency for qualifying investors.
Key points
The Welcome Stamp grants a 12-month permit to work remotely from Barbados for employers or clients based outside Barbados. It was launched in July 2020 and Cabinet extended the programme through December 31, 2026 at its October 26, 2023 meeting. Holders may reapply on expiry with a 25% fee discount on renewal.
Applicants must be employed by or operating a business registered outside Barbados, certify a minimum annual income of USD 50,000, and hold valid health insurance for the duration of the stay. Locally sourced income or employment within Barbados is prohibited under the programme rules.
The application fee is USD 2,000 for an individual and USD 3,000 for a family bundle, paid within 28 days of approval; fees are non-refundable. Processing begins within 2 business days of receipt and eligibility is confirmed or denied within approximately 5–7 business days.
Welcome Stamp holders are not deemed tax residents of Barbados for the visa period; income earned from foreign sources is not subject to Barbadian income tax during the stay, making it attractive for location-independent workers.
For longer-term residency, Barbados offers the SERP (often called its 'golden visa'): a minimum investment of USD 300,000 confers a 5-year residence permit, while USD 2,000,000+ (with net worth of at least USD 5,000,000) confers unlimited permanent residency. Citizenship can be sought after 5 years of qualifying residence.
The Barbados Tourism Ministry published Welcome Stamp statistics as of April 30, 2024, confirming the programme remains active and tracking applications, indicating continued government commitment to the scheme.
