AI regulation in Fiji (2026)

Fiji's first National Digital Strategy, launched April 2025, is the primary roadmap for digital transformation. It sequences foundational infrastructure (cybersecurity, national ID, cloud/data frameworks, digital literacy) before AI-specific governance, with an AI framework milestone set for 2027.

The NDS 2025–2030 formally targets creation of a national AI framework by 2027. A separate National AI Policy is also described as in development, recognising AI's dual-edge potential for economic growth and societal risk.

As of 2026, Fiji has no standalone AI statute or binding sectoral AI rules. Legal treatment of AI is piecemeal, relying on cybersecurity, data protection, and online safety instruments rather than AI-specific legislation.

The Online Safety Act 2018 provides some guardrails for harmful online content via the Online Safety Commission. A National Privacy and Personal Data Protection Policy has been finalised under the NDS, providing an adjacent data-governance layer relevant to AI deployments.

Australia signed an MoU with Fiji on cybersecurity cooperation covering responsible AI, and UNESCO has supported Fiji's inclusive digital transformation efforts. Fiji is also described as leading Pacific nations in AI and digital transformation initiatives.

The Ministry of Trade has announced plans to establish additional AI hubs, and AI is identified as a cornerstone of national development planning, reflecting active government interest in AI adoption ahead of formal regulatory frameworks.
