Digital Nomad & Residency - British Virgin Islands

The BVI government announced and operationalised the WIPP to allow foreign nationals employed abroad to reside in the territory and work remotely. The programme is administered by the Immigration Department with marketing support from the BVI Tourist Board and Film Commission.

Application fees are USD 1,500 (individual), USD 2,000 (couple), USD 2,750 (family), and USD 500 per additional dependent. Awardees are exempted from BVI visa requirements, work permit fees, Social Security contributions, and customs duties on small personal items; private health insurance is mandatory.

WIPP holders may not perform any work for a BVI-based employer or company with a local presence. Violations carry a USD 10,000 fine and a permanent bar from re-entry under the programme.

On 13 January 2025 the BVI government announced a Residency by Investment programme to be integrated into the Immigration and Passport Act, with a quota system to cap permits. As of mid-2026, no launch date or minimum investment thresholds had been finalised.

Permanent residence under standard immigration rules requires 20 consecutive years of lawful residence, with absences capped at 90 days per calendar year (exceptions for study or illness). A Cabinet-approved Belonger Status and Permanent Residence Policy now governs quotas and eligibility criteria.

All non-Belongers without permanent residence or an exemption require a work permit tied to a specific BVI employer and job; permits do not apply to WIPP participants performing foreign remote work. The Immigration Department has transitioned work permit renewals to a fully digital online system.
