Why does switching AI assistants mean abandoning every preference I ever taught it?
Opportunity
Your AI assistant accumulates context over hundreds of sessions covering how you think, your running projects, your communication preferences, and your technical depth. This learned context lives in a proprietary opaque format with no export standard. Switch providers and you start from zero, re-explaining your background and preferences from scratch. No interchange format for AI relationship context exists the way FHIR exists for health records, and the IETF, W3C, and major labs have not agreed on any schema. Providers have structural incentives to keep this context locked in, which turns accumulated AI context from a personal asset into a switching cost.
Why it matters
Portable AI context is the difference between an assistant that is a lasting personal asset and one that is a monthly subscription that resets every time you switch.
How I score the opportunity
The Opportunity Score is my own read, not a measurement: how much it hurts, how often it bites, and how little exists to solve it today. Higher means I think it is more worth building.
How much pain it causes when it shows up.
How often people actually run into it.
How little good tooling exists for it today.
More problems worth solving
Why does every AI app forget me the moment I close the tab?
AIWhy is learning a new field still gated by knowing what to ask?
AIWhy can a non-expert not verify what an AI just told them?
AIWhy do we test models on benchmarks but ship them on vibes?
AIWhy do AI agents have no memory of their own mistakes?
AIWhy can't I audit what a model was actually trained on?
