Why does on-chain insurance go insolvent exactly when the claims come in?
Opportunity
Total on-chain insurance coverage sits at roughly $500 million against billions of dollars in protocol TVL. In Q1 2026, a single exploit generated more claims liability than the entire on-chain insurance industry could pay without going insolvent. Parametric models automate payouts for observable triggers like stablecoin depeg, but cannot cover sophisticated vectors like governance manipulation or multisig social engineering. Indemnity models require subjective claims assessment, which reintroduces a trusted intermediary at the exact point DeFi was built to remove one.
Why it matters
Institutional capital cannot scale on-chain until there is a coverage layer that remains solvent through the specific events it was designed to insure against.
How I score the opportunity
The Opportunity Score is my own read, not a measurement: how much it hurts, how often it bites, and how little exists to solve it today. Higher means I think it is more worth building.
How much pain it causes when it shows up.
How often people actually run into it.
How little good tooling exists for it today.
More problems worth solving
