How do I migrate funds from a contract that hardcoded the cipher quantum computers will break?

83

Opportunity

More than $100 billion in DeFi protocols sits in deployed contracts with hardcoded ECDSA verification or secp256k1 key derivation baked into bytecode that cannot be changed without a proxy upgrade pattern most protocols do not have. Unlike externally owned accounts, which gain signature agility through account abstraction proposals like EIP-7701 targeted for inclusion in the Hegota fork, deployed contract logic has no equivalent escape hatch. The Ethereum Foundation formed a dedicated post-quantum team in January 2026, but its published roadmap addresses wallet recovery paths rather than the contracts where the bulk of the value is custodied. No standard migration path exists for moving assets from quantum-vulnerable contract storage into quantum-resistant alternatives without trusting a privileged multisig or a centralized bridge during the transition.

Why it matters

The lead time to coordinate governance, audit new contracts, and migrate locked liquidity out of immutable bytecode is longer than for any other class of software, and the window while quantum hardware remains experimental is narrowing faster than the ecosystem is moving.

How I score the opportunity

The Opportunity Score is my own read, not a measurement: how much it hurts, how often it bites, and how little exists to solve it today. Higher means I think it is more worth building.

Severity9/10

How much pain it causes when it shows up.

Frequency6/10

How often people actually run into it.

Whitespace9/10

How little good tooling exists for it today.
